<text>The University of Iowa has several projects that are reshaping options for teaching staff and librarians as they work to build new types of academic resources. Two of these are Bailiwick and TWIST. Bailiwick is a web space where academic passions are realised in HTML and creative home pages. Bailliwick is home to Web sites that are experimental in form, like Border crossings, which provides comprehensive and in-depth resources, or that take on a narrow, highly specialised topic like French Feminists. In the Teaching with Innovative Style and Technology Project (TWIST), teaching staff are paired with librarians partners to create Web-based learning environments. These partners are called TWISTed Pairs. This semester 27 academic staff members from 13 departments are paired with 11 librarians from various departments, creating 35 course-related Web sites.</text>

<text>Theses and dissertations are the required evidence of scholarship or creative activity for graduate students. Realizing that much of what graduate students accomplish cannot be captured in a traditional print thesis or dissertation, the University of Iowa has joined many universities across the United States that are seeking ways of enabling students to use new media in their scholarship. Electronic Theses and Dissertations—or ETDs—hold great promise in providing students with options on how their work might be presented, archived and preserved, and made accessible to a much larger community of readers. The University of Iowa Libraries and Graduate College have joined forces to plan, implement, and manage an ETD option for graduate students. This new partnership found a myriad of issues that challenge conventions in presentation, access, and preservation of research and creative work that are represented in the technology of communicating ideas, in policy, and in the interpersonal relationships between students and their faculty mentors. The presentation that follows will focus on the process of enabling graduate students to engage in an electronic presentation of their scholarship through a discussion of the organizational and technical aspects of Iowa’s ETD option, and the issues and vision for the University Libraries.</text>

<text>The rapidly expanding digital library network Crisis, Tragedy and Recovery (CTR) was funded in 2009 by the National Science Foundation through a three year grant. CRT captures and stores information for spontaneous events so users can access, search, analyze, and study these collections and learn from events and tragedies that happen around the world and across cultures and languages. The panel will discuss the need for this distributed digital library and the project’s objectives, as well as some of the challenges faced. Topics will include lessons learned, best practices, and the connections between automated text mining, storytelling technologies, expert recommendations, and studies to disseminate insights for special populations and for disaster recovery. In addition to access through the growing distributed network, the archived data will be hosted and made accessible through the Internet Archive Data Center in San Francisco. As required, metadata or data will be stored and replicated around the network, respecting security and privacy requirements for sensitive information. The project is being designed to support studies by social and behavioral scientists, scholars, and policy makers, as well as the general public.</text>

The collection, housed in the Department of Special Collections, is a vast assortment of records from the Redpath Lyceum Bureau, which was a major booking agent for "circuit" Chautauqua performances in the Midwest. The focus of the digitization project, called "Traveling Culture: Circuit Chautauqua in the Twentieth Century," is a set of talent flyers contained within this vast collection.
